Home Based Business
Work Life Balance Articles

Work life balance is a really important issue for many people who start a full time or part time home based business. There are two aspects to this. First, why are so many people choosing to work from home? Second, how can you stop yourself overworking or becoming distracted?

CHOOSING TO WORK FROM HOME

There are so many different reasons to work from home. Some people find it difficult to leave the house for physical reasons or because they need to stay home to care for loved ones. Others can't get a job and decide the best way forward is to seek self employment, finding that a home based business is a good low cost option. Or perhaps you reach 'retirement age' but you need more income.

More and more people, though, are simply choosing to work from home full time or part time. There is a desire to have a greater sense of freedom, to quit working for someone else, to have a greater sense of choice. Maybe you have a goal to build residual income. These are some of the hopes! But of course a home based business - and self employment in general - is not an easy option. It is not easy, but that is a price that many of us feel is worth paying.

WORK LIFE BALANCE AT HOME

You can read some fascinating discussions on this in some of our visitors' home business stories - the need to separate work and family life. Also the hard work that a whole family can put into a small business.

Some of the most important tips, in my view, are:

  • Have a separate work area - even if it's a foldaway desk you put up and take down each day.
  • Keep set work hours - so you know when it's time to down tools and tend to another aspect of your life.
  • Establish clear boundaries with your customers - you shouldn't be on 24 hour call just because you work from home

It would be great to hear your views on this!

What is Your View on Work Life Balance?

Do you have some tips or a story you can share?

It could be about your reasons for starting a home based business - or how you deal with keeping focused or stopping yourself overworking.

OTHER WORK LIFE BALANCE ARTICLES & WEBSITES

Starting a home based business is an important life decision. You can read more about this in our becoming self employed article. One of the key points is that self employment requires a different sort of thinking compared to working for someone else, and it's useful to be aware of the entrepreneur mindset. Personal finance author Robert Kiyosaki also describes four different patterns of income, and each of these is associated with different cash flow quadrant mindsets. For many people, starting a home business is an attempt to gain more freedom and independence.

Also, for more information about work life balance, I recommend that you take a look at Family Life and Challenges.com and Balancing Work and Family.com. Both websites aim to help you juggle the competing priorities in your life to reach your full potential.
