Work From Home Business Ideas
Part Time of Full Time?

Some work from home business ideas can be full time small businesses from day one, while others work better as part time to start with, but with the potential to build in the longer term.

FULL TIME WORK FROM HOME BUSINESS IDEAS

If you have no other income to fall back on, you'll probably have to rely on your existing skills and sell your labour. It doesn't mean that you're stuck doing this for the rest of live. But if you need cash flow right now, you do what it takes.

In our interview with Dan Furman, he mentions self employment ideas like handyman, lawncare or petcare as examples. Other ideas are bookkeeping, copywriting or consulting - particularly if you already know people who will hire your services.

But many successful full time home based businesses start out as part time. That's the ideal - to have income coming in from a day job or other sources while your part time business is growing.

PART TIME WORK FROM HOME BUSINESS IDEAS

This is the biggest opportunity for most people - making extra money at home. You could start the same sort of handyman, lawncare, bookkeeping or consulting businesses.

Or you might try an idea that has little chance of earning you a living at the beginning. Possibilities are network marketing (MLM), various computer based businesses or setting up a business where it will take you time to find customers.

The main difference when you are building a home based business to produce a second income is that you have time on your side. You can research, sift through different ideas, figure out whether there is a gap in the market for what you'd like to do - and so on. You also have time to build sources of residual income to help improve your long term finances.

'REAL' SMALL BUSINESSES OR SYSTEMS?

Dan Furman makes the distinction between what he calls real small businesses on the one hand, and ideas based on 'systems' or 'programs' on the other. He warns that many of these 'easy to make money' systems could be scams. Real small businesses, he says, include skilled trades or traditional servics such as pet care, or selling crafts - the sort of traditional work from home business idea.

I agree that you have to be on the look out for scams - and I also agree that the vast majority of people will not achieve overnight success. However, I believe that there are real opportunities to build a successful home based business with both traditional and systems based ideas - provided you are willing to put build your income gradually over time rather than hoping you can buy a low cost quick fix highly profitable turnkey business.
