What is a Business Plan
For a Home Based Business?

Setting Goals For Success

What is a business plan for the practical purpose of helping you achieve success in home based businesses? And what are the key mistakes to avoid?

In my view, it's best to look at this in terms of setting goals for your homebased business rather than trying to produce a 16 page document where you are in danger of including too much detail and losing sight of the most important points.

You will probably produce pages of notes when researching the best home business ideas.

But you then need to condense these notes into a short concise document - ideally no more than one page.

Your notes need to cover income and costs, market research - whether there's a gap in the market, your time input and an assessment of different small business ideas.

With any goal there are three key elements: why? what? and how?

WHY
Step one is to define the reason why you want a successful home based business. The very best reason is that you need the money - because "necessity is the mother of invention". Identifying - and writing down - your 'reason why' is so important because this is what will help you focus your planning efforts to seek out the best homebased business ideas and to keep on going if it takes longer than expected to get results (as it often does).

WHAT
Step two is to research different possible businesses that have a realistic chance of producing the results you want. At this stage, you might make a definite decision that you will try to make money online, or that you want to go for network marketing, or that you'd prefer a traditional offline business. My advice is to have a good look at different ideas rather than going for the first one that comes into your head. Before you can finalise your goal you need to look at the third element.

HOW
Having identified the general type of business you want to start, step three is to look for a gap in the market - to find a profitable niche where there is plenty of demand for your service and not too much competition.

In all businesses, the key question is why would a potential customer buy from you and not from your competitors?. Regardless of whether you're aiming to make money online or offline, what are you going to be offering of value to potential customers?

So, in considering the question 'What is a business plan for a successful home based business?', my recommendation is to focus on the three key elements of goal setting - why? what? and how?
