Start Your Own Business by Rieva Lesonsky

by Brandon Allin
(Newcastle, Ontario, Canada)

Late last year, I finally worked up the courage to follow through with my lifelong (or close to it) goal of starting my own business. The business was to be a local music management company, offering tools, strategies, publicity, and more for young and upcoming bands in the Greater Toronto Area. Dreams aside, I was quickly hit with the reality that I knew next to nothing about formulating such a venture, and so I turned to the best resource of all: literature.

After a recommendation from a friend who found himself in a similar situation, I purchased Start Your Own Business, a paperback penned by Rieva Lesonsky. Eager to pick up and tips and tricks, I dove right in, and was quickly immersed in Lesonsky's perfectly articulated thoughts. The book was overflowing with helpful hints and corporate strategies, ranging from that of discovering your target audience, to building a brand from the ground up, to cheap and affordable promotion ideas, to financing your venture every step of the way. While the most certainly didn't drizzle any magic beans upon my path (no book could), what it did do was open my eyes to not only the task, but the challenge ahead of me.

Naturally, after finishing the book, which sat at a whopping 700 in-depth pages, I was overcome with two emotions: a sense of fear, and a sense of optimism. On the one hand, the question "what did I get myself into?" pit-pattered throughout my brain, and on the other, I felt more prepared than ever for the climb before me. While Lesonsky's work won't put in the hard work for you, it will prepare entrepreneurs with similar goals to my own with the basic tools and knowledge to succeeding, depending of course on their motivation, determination, and financial backing.

To date, my business is home to over 30 clients (for a small business cemented in a fragile industry, I consider that quite a feat), all of whom have had nothing but glowing reviews for my strategies and mindset on the industry. True, I do deserve some of the credit for my insistence on success, but much of that very success can be attributed to the printed course that was Start Your Own Business.

The self-proclaimed "Road Map to Success" proved to be nothing but clear and concise directions to a better future.
