Setting Boundaries in a Home Based Business

by Becca
(New brunswick , NJ USA)

In 2007, my partner and I started a home based business. We took a course to become home stagers. Home stagers are individuals who help sellers prepare a home for sale. We are hired by either a realtor or a seller to come in and help declutter and arrange furniture to highlight the best assets of a room.

My career is incredibly rewarding and owning my own company makes it even more wonderful. The positive aspect of owning my own company is that I can make my own hours.

In order to make sure that I can spend time with my children and husband , I block out two weekends a month. I tell clients that we already have a project set for those times. This allows me to take my children shopping or to a movie. I can spend time playing board games with them or help them with a school project. It also gives my husband and I tine to have date night or just sit on the couch and watch a movie together.

I have learned that the best thing that one can do when they own their own business is to set and adhere to boundaries. Boundaries are key in making sure that your business responsibilities do not encroach upon your family time.

Stuart's comment: Thank you Becca. I think that setting boundaries is a real challenge for many of us who run home businesses. For a start, there are no set holidays. Blocking out time in your diary is a great idea.
