How I Fell into
My Own Home Based Business

by Ardith Colorado

I fell into starting my own home based business when I was sewing for another company. The owner asked me if I wanted to start my own business because she saw the potential of making more money on my own and I thought it would be a great opportunity to work from home and set my own hours, as long as I got the job done on time.

I did not have the money to buy my own sewing machines, so she loaned me the money and I set to work looking for equipment. I bought two machines, a four thread Serger and a flat bed machine and set to work getting customers.

I advertised in the newspaper, printed business cards, and handed them out wherever I went. Soon, requests started coming in for sewing jobs. It was slow at first, but started to pick up when customers would tell others about my work.

I do the jobs as they come in, and if I have spare time between jobs, I do other things that time permits. I have paid off the loan and now make enough money to help keep our home running. I have been doing this for 10 years, since I was 52, but I am now considering doing this only as a hobby so that I can retire.

Stuart's comment: Thank you Ardith. It's interesting when you say that the work was slow to come in at first - but then gradually built up. This is a typical pattern for most small businesses. One of the advantages of being home based is that you can keep your costs low while you build up your income.
