Books Interviews and Web Sites
This section contains home based business advice from interviews and also some well known small biz books. INTERVIEWS Home based business guru Dan Furman is author of Start & Run A Real Home Based Business and Do The Web Write. Dan gives very clear advice and puts his views across strongly in our Dan Furman interview If you are a bookkeeper you may like to see what Sylvia Jaumann has to say about starting a bookkeeping business. Sylvia has been working as a self employed bookkeeper for many years and also advises other bookkeepers on how to run a successful home based business. There are several small business ideas that look good in the context of tough economic times. Many people are looking for genuine home based business advice on ebay trading and so we spoke to Skip McGrath who has been running a very successful ebay business for the past ten years. The residential real estate market is slow and many home owners are looking to improve the internal decor of their houses to improve their chances of a sale. Debra Gould is an expert in this field of 'home staging' and has some great advice for anyone who would like to know how to become a home stager. With so many people chasing jobs, there is demand for CV or resume writing services. We spoke to UK based Jason Tomlin who runs a home based resume writing business, and also USA based Teena Rose who is author of Start, Operate, Profit! The Ultimate Resource to Building a $100,000 Resume-Writing Business. The economic downturn also makes it tough for young people, including college students who have loans to repay. We interviewed Ryan Phillips from The Little Welsh Deli, a home based deli business that has expanded quickly and enabled Clare Phillips to quit her nursing job. Tutoring expert, and author of Becoming a Better Tutor: a Data Driven Approach to Tutoring, Dr Alicia Holland-Johnson gives some great advice on starting a tutoring business working from home, a small business that she thinks might be in high demand in the next few years. Another popular small business idea is parcel delivery and you may be interested in our interview with Sam Knowlton on starting a courier business from home. Joe Waynick researched many home based business ideas before starting to sell used books online in 2006. In this interview, Joe recounts his brilliant success story and covers some key points on setting up a used books home business. You can also read a great interview with Rob Warlow on Small Business Start Up Loans - a tricky subject now that bank finance is much more difficult to find after the credit crunch. A great point about all these interviews is that you will find excellent home based business advice that you can apply to any small business, as well as information on specific home business ideas. BOOKS The books I have selected cover the big picture rather than the nitty gritty detail. That's mainly because I belive that you are more likely to be successful in your venture if you follow the thinking of these well known authors.
The first book is The EMyth Revisited by Michael E Gerber. The subtitle of the book is Why most small businesses don't work and what to do about it. Gerber's insights are vital to your success. My second selection is Cashflow Quadrant by Robert T Kiyosaki. This book looks at the different strategies and thinking needed for four different types of income generation. Also there is an excellent discussion of passive income. Thirdly, I suggest The Slight Edge written by Jeff Olson. I recommend this work to build the right attitude towards your venture. Small steps over time can add up to big results! All these books give very valuable pointers on the thinking, attitude and persistence needed for success.
