The EMyth Revisited - Michael E Gerber Advice For The Home Based Business
Michael E Gerber wrote The EMyth in 1995. The subtitle of the book was Why Most Small Businesses Don't Work And What To Do About It.Though it was aimed at small business owners in general, I think this book holds vital information for anyone who wants to start making extra money at home. Gerber's key message is that most people who start an enterprise do not achieve success because they lack the knowledge to make a business work. For example, someone who is a good car mechanic knows about mending cars. However, they may know nothing about how to build a business that offers car repair services. In order to increase the chances of running a succesful home based business, Gerber says that you need to learn about business strategy, marketing, money, client service and sales. You also need to understand how to improve your business by innovation and monitoring results. One of the key aims of this web site is to provide you with some of the vital information you need on these topics. Possibly the number one lesson is to ensure that, before your home based business start up, you create a clear vision of your strategic objective. In other words, what exactly will you be offering? Why will people buy from you? How much money do you want to make? And by when? Then you need to allocate sufficient time on strategic management tasks to bring your vision into being. The problem is that many 'would be entrepreneurs' get too tied up with day to day tasks and fail to allocate sufficent time to working 'on the business'. By the way, one reason I am such a fan of Michael E Gerber's message is that I trained as an E Myth Business Coach and spent several years helping entrepeneurs learn business building skills.
