Being fresh out of school and trying to get your first small business off of the ground can be a daunting task! This is the position in right now, and I am equal parts excited and nervous. I am a photographer, with a bachelor of fine art degree from an American art and design university. Currently, I’m trying to build up my business as quickly and effectively as possible. Networking, advertising and hard work are all apart of my new daily routine. I’ve been experimenting with advertising with Google AdWords, and on Facebook. So far, Facebook has been more productive. Google requires a higher budget to get a substantial amount of traffic. Facebook is also interesting because you can fine tune the demographic that you want your ads to be shown to. Word of mouth marketing is also very important, and I’m in the process of following up with all of my old clients and old leads that might be able to help me on my way. Home businesses are fun, can be more than a little stressful, but all in all, I wouldn’t trade it for the corporate grind.

Stuart's comment: More and more people are taking up self employment and setting up home-based businesses. For some people there is no choice. For others, the desire to avoid the 'corporate grind', as you put it, is very strong.
