Basing Your Business At Home Saves A Lot Of Money

by Kayla/DG
(Orem, UT)

I started a home based business because I was very very bored with the job options available to me in my area and I have a very low cost of living. I live in a valley with two universities fifteen minutes away, so trying to go the college route takes years, and college graduates with masters' degrees are working at part time jobs along with everyone else who doesn't have a college degree.

Currently, my business does freelancing work. I like freelancing work because I can look at the price, figure out what I need to do to get there, and do it, instead of having to get up, go to work every day just to keep the job when I don't need the money. I also do this because I am working on an online sales business and when I tried doing jobs at the same time, it didn't work very well.

The best way to balance time with business and home is to figure out what you need to pay the bills with, figure out how much you have to do every day to do that, and then do that. With the cost of commuting and purchasing expensive 'office appropriate' clothing out of the way, it can be surprising how low the bills really are when you can split the work up between thirty days a month instead of twenty, and can work on it at any time of the day you need.

Stuart's comment: Thank you Kayla. I agree that running a home based business does save on overheads compared to renting a business premises away from home. So a home based business is usally lower risk. You don't need to make so many sales to break even - and you have a better chance of avoiding the cash flow problems that many traditional small businesses face.
